Accessing the Artorias of the Abyss content in Dark Souls can be remarkably cryptic for new and returning players alike. Unlike modern expansions that unlock directly from a main menu, entering this expansion requires completing a specific sequence of late-game steps spread across Lordran. Understanding this exact progression ensures that you will not miss out on some of the finest boss battles and lore the game has to offer.

Rescuing Dusk of Oolacile in Darkroot Basin

Your journey to the expansion begins in Darkroot Basin, where you must first eliminate the massive Hydra lurking in the lake. After defeating the beast, reload your game session and trek around the left side of the basin past the waterfall. Deep within the alcove, a Golden Crystal Golem will spawn holding Dusk of Oolacile inside. Defeat this golem to free her, then answer affirmatively when she asks for assistance.

Retrieving the Broken Pendant from Duke's Archives

Before advancing further toward the expansion portal, you must secure the Lordvessel from Anor Londo to gain entry into late-game zones. Once you have unlocked access to The Duke's Archives, proceed up the initial elevator into the main entrance chamber. In the corner of this room, you will find a solitary Crystal Golem that drops the key item known as the Broken Pendant upon defeat. Note that this item will only drop if you have already freed Dusk of Oolacile.

Entering the Expansion Area Through the Abyss Portal

With the Broken Pendant in your inventory, return to the shadowy cavern in Darkroot Basin where you previously saved Dusk. In place of the golem, you will now discover a dark, swirling portal suspended over the water. Approaching and interacting with this portal triggers a cutscene where a giant dark hand pulls you into the past. You will arrive directly at the Sanctuary Garden, where your journey through Oolacile officially begins.

Essential Preparation and Timing Tips

Because the expansion contains some of the most aggressive bosses in Dark Souls, it is best tackled near the end of your playthrough. Make sure your primary weapons are fully upgraded before stepping through the threshold into Oolacile. Most importantly, ensure you do not defeat the final story boss before finishing the expansion content, as doing so immediately forces your character into New Game Plus.
